    Jaisalmer Camel Safari - FAQs

When mounting a camel, first make sure that the camel is kneeling down. If it’s not, then ask your camel guide to help hold the camel steady while you climb onto its back. Put your left foot into the stirrup, and then swing your right leg over the camel’s back. Once you’re seated, grab onto the saddle with both hands.

It can be a little unsteady riding a camel, especially when they start to stand up. It’s normal to feel a little uneasy that you might fall off, and to worry about how you’re going to keep in place when the tall creature begins to move. When your camel starts to rise while you’re on board, which it does with its back legs first, the idea is to lean backwards before moving forward as it raises itself on its front legs. The best course of action is to simply go with it, and wobble around while holding on to your saddle at all times. The unsteady stride takes some getting used to, so the best thing to do is just go with it.

To control the camel, you’ll need to use the reins. The rein on the right side of the camel’s head controls its direction, while the one on the left controls its speed. To make the camel go forward, pull on both reins simultaneously. To make it stop, pull on the left rein. And to make it turn, pull on one rein while loosening the other. Just like that you’re an instant pro!

Ideally, a camel safari in Jaisalmer is meant for an overnight (two days) stay in the desert. Travelers spend couple of hours on the camel back at a time, and then take a break for a meal and tea. Make sure you tightly hold on to the saddle when the camel is kneeling or standing to avoid getting jolted by the move.

All our safaris you can see below include native experienced camel drivers, one camel each person, all the drinking water you may need, meals cooked with safe water and comfortable clean bedding for sleeping under the open sky. You can go as long as you want, and it's wild and deep in that desert.

We advise that you wear something, like non-slip loose trousers/pants, long sleeved shirt, a hat, comfortable shoes rather than shorts, a skirt, or a dress. Apply sunscreen to exposed parts, like your face and hands and wear a hat, sunglasses, and scarf to block out any sand that the wind may blow in.

These are some of the clothes you should wear before embarking on a camel safari in jaisalmer:

    • Cargo Shorts you can move easily in over flowy skirts.
    • Opt for pants over dresses to avoid awkward moments.
    • Bring a scarf or Dupatta/Turban to shield from the sun and sandstorms.
    • Tie back your long hair to keep it out of your eyes.
When going on camel rides in Jaisalmer, it is advisable to wear sturdy hiking or walking boots or shoes rather of the more touristy flip-flops. It really won’t do you any favors out in the Thar Desert, and when getting up on and trying to stay on a camel.

A small backpack is pretty much essential as well, so that you can easily carry your items about (like clothings, camera & water). Your guide will probaby strap it to your camel for the riding parts anyways, so you won't have to wear for during the ride.

Sway with the camels movement, not against it.
Camels have a particular style of walking that’s perfect for the loose sandy desert environment. It’s less perfect for your posterior. So instead of trying to resist the camel’s gentle swaying by forcing yourself to sit up-right and still the whole time, move with the camel, not against it. In other words: just relax your body and breathe deeply. The less tension you hold in your body, the more comfortable the ride. Of course, don’t zen out too much that you fall off your camel – always make sure you’re holding onto your saddle handle-bars with a firm grip. If you’re feeling more confident, place one hand on the handle-bar in front of you and your other hand behind your seat. This allow you to keep your balance whilst rocking along with the camel’s movements.
